WHAT TO BUY AT COSTCO IN ALASKA

Alaska is an exceptionally beautiful and unique place to visit, or if you are lucky enough, to call home! However, as with any travel, Alaska CAN be expensive but there are plenty of ways to cut costs without sacrificing parts of your vacation.

Consider stopping at Costco a time (or two!) on your trip and not only will it save you money but it will also help you stay on track with your healthy eating habits. Since there are many parts of Alaska that are still very remote, you may go hours without finding a grocery store or restaurant so it is important that you plan in advance.

If you are planning an adventurous vacation like us, you will absolutely be spending days in remote areas so packing your lunch and snacks is imperative. We were able to pick up all of our snacks and also our breakfast and lunch/dinner for most days and not break the bank. You can still enjoy the local restaurants without eating out three times per day. 🙂 We always try to limit our dining out to once per day (at the most) when traveling and Costco makes it easy to do that.

Keep in mind that just like at your local Costco, these locations will have different items during different times of the year. Have you been to a Costco in Alaska? Were you lucky enough to snag some fresh seafood, wildberry products, Alaskan State Fair tickets, tents, or any other special items? If so, comment below and let us know so we can add them to our shopping list for others!

We went to Alaska in the fall of 2019 (August 31 – September 13 to be exact) and during our trip we visited Costco three times (!!!).

I’ve included prices on the items that I had a receipt for or those items that I remembered the prices. The prices listed are current as of September 12, 2019, but can change at any time. You will need a Costco membership to purchase these items.

COSTCO TRAVEL

As I shared in our Costco Kauai (Hawaii) post, you can book your trip to Alaska through Costco Travel. We flew into Anchorage and planned our own trip but if you are more a cruise person, Costco has a ton of Alaska Cruise Packages available.

One part of Costco Travel that we were able to take advantage of was their awesome rental car prices! We had a rental car for the first week of our trip and paid hundreds less than comparable rental cars on other websites. We actually reserved an intermediate size car but when we went to pick up the car we were given an SUV (which was a great thing because I’m not sure we would have even fit in a car with all the food we ended up buying after picking up the rental!).

GAS

If you have a rental car you will likely need to fill up before returning the car. Both Costco locations in Anchorage make that easy because they are not far from the airport and their gas prices are far better than any other station nearby.

GIFT CARDS

It’s always fun to see what kind of local gift cards Costco carries (we scored catamaran discount gift cards in Kauai!). Unfortunately, this time we were not as lucky to find discounts for any excursions we wanted to do but they did have some available for local restaurants and a few activities (such as H2Oasis Indoor Waterpark, Matanuska Brewing Company, The Rustic Goat, and Fat Ptarmigan).
