Scott & I just returned home from a two week hiking trip to Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Grand Teton National Park. We hiked over 140 miles during our trip. Hiking is a great cardio workout that burns 400-500 calories per hour! Use this list of essential items to get moving up that mountain. Note this is a very basic list we will share more in-depth packing lists at a later date!
Below is a picture from Glacier National Park before we started our 19 mile Pitamakin-Dawson Loop hike.
- Protein Bars
- Rice Cakes
- Natural Peanut Butter (individual packets are very handy)
- For longer or overnight hikes consider packing a water purifier.
- Small Camelbak Pack
- For longer or overnight hikes consider a backpack with a hydration reservoir.
- Small First Aid Kit
- DriFit Shirt
- Convertible Pants
- Rain Jacket
- Wool Hiking Socks
- Hiking Shoes (preferably Gore-Tex)
Check the weather for the area where you will be hiking. The temperatures can vary and change drastically and quickly so always dress in layers.
Below is a picture of Whitney on top of Bighorn Peak (Yellowstone National Park) after hiking 6.4 miles straight up the mountain (with an elevation gain of 4,300 ft).
Enjoy your hike by making sure that you are adequately prepared!
