Hi! New to your site and very interested in starting the "eating clean" lifestlye change (and start working on my husband to do the same too). When you started "eating clean" did yall do a pre-cleanse ? Did you slowly adapt to the change? or did you just wake up and had it all prepared to start? Also, about how much is your grocery bill a week and/or month?
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel!
DeleteNo need to do a cleanse - eating clean is cleanse enough - trust me! Just set a day/date and go for it! Try to prep all your meals (it just makes life easier especially in the beginning) and start fresh on a morning. I would recommend starting ASAP!
Jim and I spend approximately $140/week on all groceries - this does include regular items like laundry detergent, etc. It's not expensive to eat clean - you just need to go to the store with a plan. Buy bulk chicken and have several recipes to use with it, etc.
Good luck and feel free to email updates on your journey going forward - we would love to see them!
Tiffany
Hi-
DeleteWhat supplements do you take on a daily basis?
I am seriously considering starting to eat clean. I work out twice a week with a bootcamp style fitness and Im starting to see results but I know eating needs to change. I am super nervous because my friends are similar size and my life is full of tempation.
ReplyDeleteAny suggestion on how to resist and not feel like Im missing out on social activities??
Thanks so much :)
Hi Stephi! You may get some flack for it at first but they will get used to it! They will probably start asking you questions & then you can help them! Just remember that you are doing this for YOURSELF & no one else!
DeleteIt will be the best decision you will ever make! :-)
Good luck!
Sorry for the late reply, just found rhis website... Stephi, hope you took the plunge by now... I get grief from some people for my clean eating lifestyle, but those who are important to me support me and I say the heck with the rest... A lot of it is their own insecurities and guilt... :) I will never go back to what I was! Xoxoxo
Deletegreat book to read: pH Miracle
ReplyDeleteweb site: www.phmiracleliving.com
it's all about going alkaline to help your body heal and be healthy!
Thank you for your suggestion! We will definitely look into it.
DeleteWhere do you all shop? I have been looking at shopping at Akins (I live in Oklahoma) and I really don't know of any other stores. I'm sort of struggling with where to start
ReplyDeleteWe normally shop at Costco, Publix & Whole Foods because those are the stores that are close to us. You can eat clean by shopping at pretty much any grocery store. Our shopping lists are listed above so that should help you! Good luck!
DeleteWhat is the difference between paleo and eating clean? They seem the same.
ReplyDeletePaleo is a grain-restriciton diet that only consists of lean meat, fruit, veggies and nuts. It basically mirrors want our caveman ancestors would've eaten and is based on the belief that our bodily and functions have developed around that type of diet.
DeleteEating clean is basically eating foods that are all natural, unprocessed and free of chemicals and other food additives (food colorings, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, etc.).
They're pretty close...the main difference is that the eat clean diet allows whole grains as part of the diet.
What about children? We have a 2.5 and 4 year old. Any additions they would need? We blend some foods into 'smoothies' or 'sauces' to get them to consume some veggies...thoughts on toddlers eating clean? Seriously, they do not need any more energy...they wear me out already (LOL). Also, what about a multi-vitamin? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHello Mrs. Love! Children SHOULD totally eat clean! You will have to get a little more creative with the meals if you have picky eaters, but it is really good for them not to start off their life with processed and unclean foods!
DeleteAs far as a multi-vitamin goes, it's really hard to recommend just one. It's typically always a good idea to take one, but the type just depends on your needs. I would recommend asking your primary care physician or going to a health food store and speaking with them.
I have started to buy more clean items on my last two trips to the grocery store. The hardest part about shopping is believing the actual labels. Do I believe that a product is all natural or organic simply because it says so? What do ya'll look for when buying these items?
ReplyDeleteWe typically look for items with the least amount of ingredients. For example, if buying applesauce, we ALWAYS buy the no-sugar added variety, but opt only for the jar that has apples and ascorbic acid (they add this so it doesn't turn brown). If we could find one that said only apples, we would buy it!
DeleteI have just started eating clean and am finding myself spending a lot of time in the kitchen. With a 2 year old that's not always a good option. I know that preparation is key; how well do your recipes reheat/freeze? I'm thinking of cooking like a mad woman once my LO goes to bed and just reheating a bunch of the meals when I need them.
ReplyDeleteThanks SO much for this blog. Y'all are amazing. Keep inspiring!
Hi Michelle! We do spend A LOT of time in the kitchen! We (Scott & I) prep most of our food on Sunday & reheat it during the week. I would definitely cook while your LO is in bed - almost all of the recipes we post are still just as good once reheated! I almost never cook during the week! Good luck & thank you for following us! Check in with us in a few months & let us know how you are doing!
DeleteHi Michelle...I hear ya with the kids...I found both my kids love to help cook (2.5 and 4) in the kitchen. It takes more time, but they have learned a lot. I found a Learning Tower (big sturdy step stool) for them at a yard sale and they have been 'helping' since almost birth...even if it is just holding a measuring spoon. Good Luck!
DeleteI'm so glad I stumbled onto your blog (from Pinterest!). :) I have been considering eating clean for the past couple of weeks, or at least kicking out sugar. But if I quit sugar, I might as well go the rest of the way. I used to be extremely healthy in high school, but in the four years since I've graduated, I've gained over 20 pounds!!! I know that college and being a young married couple had a lot to do with that, so now that I'm graduated I'm ready to get back on track. Now I just have to get my husband on board so I'm not buying double groceries! ;)
ReplyDeleteHey there! Sounds exactly like me & Scott! We will be doing a post soon on getting other family members "on board" but until then I would just suggest leading by example & he will eventually change! Scott started about a year before me!
DeleteYou are totally correct with the sugar - get rid of it!! Hopefully our blog will help you find recipes both of you can enjoy! Thanks for following!
Hi there,
ReplyDeleteI've been eating clean for a while and traking all my food but I find that with eating protein every meal, I eat way too much for my daily intake (I think i'm supposed to have around 62 and I usually have double that!). Is this normal and should I be watching my protein intake?
Thanks a lot, LOOOOOOVVVEEE your blog!!!!!
Hi Joe, thanks for the kind words!
DeleteReally it all depends on how active you are, what type of activity you are currently doing (aerobic vs anaerobic, cardio vs. weights), what the intensity of your workouts are, your age, height, weight, and goals.
Typically, I eat nearly 300 grams of protein in one day...that sounds like a TON, but I spend about 90 minutes lifting weights very intensely for 5 days per week.
If you're trying to lose weight, don't be too concerned about getting too much protein...I'd aim for about 1 gram per pound of body weight (200 grams for 200 lbs), but you can go as high as 1.5 grams if your workouts are very intense. Keep in mind that if you have had any kidney conditions then you'd need to consult with your doctor prior to increasing your intake. Your body is a very intellingent machine and constant breakdown...it knows what to do with the protein; if it doesn't go to vital organs for repair then it will just get passed off as waste.
Hope this helps...feel free to email us if you need more specific information.
I have a question about the differences between almond milk and regular milk? Do you drink regular milk at all? and what are the benefits of almond milk?
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteYou have inspired me to eat clean! Getting the grocery list together as I post. I work out 4-5 times per week, cardio and weight training. Looking at your diet, I have tweaked mine to look like yours. I was wondering what vitamins, supplements you take daily, weekly?
Thanks!
Melissa
Love this site thank you so much! Ive been following about a month and loving it! I seemed to have slightly injured my glute muscle or whatever muscle you use to lower yourself into a seated position a couple off days ago showing off my toe touches LOL( hey im a 33 year old mother of three..I thought they needed showcasing haha apparently i was wrong)anyway I took the next day off now im ansy to get back to working out. I know you arent physical therapists or docs, but just curious as to your thoughts on working out the lower body gently, getting back into it, or just going upper body, and also how should i be adjusting my eating during this possible down time. It is getting better, but fairly sore still;) thanks so much! For the last two years I usually play pretty rigorous racquetball 5 days a week and total body resistance/weights two days a week just to give you an idea of where im at. I have ate semi clean for the last 18 months, but only "clean" for the last month and im amazed at the difference, especially in my core, from the last month compared to the last month! thank you thank you!
ReplyDeleteHa that last line should have read last 18 months!
ReplyDeleteHi! I started eating clean two weeks ago and have already lost 9.6 lbs! I'm just shocked, amazed, delighted! Thanks for this blog, especially the recipes which keep my family happy with plenty of variety! This is the first week I am trying "prepping ahead." I am so excited to have less time in the kitchen by prepping on the weekend!
ReplyDeleteHey guys, I have a pretty basic problem that I can't seem to find a basic solution for. When I make a meal in the crock pot or anything where I'm cooking in bulk. How am i supposed to measure the stuff as cooked, since my husband needs more calories then I do? I think we're having some portion issues. We are eating clean but not seeming to get the portions right once things are cooked together. i know how to measure using your hand and such when it's raw and just for me but when it comes to combining it to cook everything on a sunday night.. then what?
ReplyDeleteHey guys,
ReplyDeleteJust wondering your thoughts about Raw Apple Cider Vinegar and drinking it daily?
Thanks!
I haven't made a total commitment to my exercise goals, but have to my diet, and was wondering what adjustments to make in eating clean until my workouts are more routine?
ReplyDeleteHey
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what tips you may have for me and my boyfriend. We have a similar story to Whitney and Scott of being at a healthy weight when we started dating and now 2 years later realizing how much we have gained. We are broke, busy college students who both work and to make matters worse I've just been diagnosed with severe asthma making working out very hard for me. How do we start with these limitations?
Thanks!
Hello All!
ReplyDeleteI was just wondering if, with Thanksgiving coming up, you could post a sample Clean Eating Thanksgiving Dinner?
It would be really helpful! I have invited my friends over for a Friend Thanksgiving, and will be making everything Clean.
Thank you!!!!
Kait
Hi Kait!
DeleteIt's funny that you mention that. We will be starting a recipe series after Halloween with clean recipes suitable for your Thanksgiving meal! Stay tuned!
Tiffany
Hello!
ReplyDeleteI have been eating as clean as possible for the past two weeks! Definitely some hiccups here and there but doing well for the most part and working out 4-5 times a week. I wanted to know if it is normal that my digestive system is off since the change. I would have expected it to have been even better than before but I find myself extra gassy and with loose stools.. (sorry to be so graphic) any thoughts on why?
Thanks!

ok - Valentine's Day is coming up. In the past, I go all out making cute lil themed food...pink, white and red everywhere (I know, it's a sickness...I do it for every holiday!!!). Anyway, this year we will be at a friends and I want to bring something 'themed', but need some help. Anyone have any 'clean' ideas out there, so when I get to the party, I have no problem? thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteQuestion, how do you eat clean when going out to eat? I enjoy a date night here and there but we haven't gone in a while because im not sure of how to eat clean when out? What do yall do?
ReplyDeleteWhen I go out to eat, I look for grilled, baked, or broiled meat and have vegetables that are steamed or baked. I stay away from fried, breaded, and those covered in cream sauces or cheese. Hope this helps some.
