Product Review & GIVEAWAY :: Cocomo Joe Foods

Take me out to the ball game... take me out the crowd... buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks.... WHAT??? WAIT!! Cracker Jacks brand caramel corn isn't clean. NOPE, it's NOT!!

But Cocomo Joe's CocomoCorn is!!  Can I just - it's A-Mazing!!

Made mainly with ingredients derived from coconuts, Cocomo Joe is committed making high quality foods, organically that taste delicious! The products not only organic, but vegan, raw, paleo-friendly, gluten free and GMO free! Founder, Joe started his business from no more than his own kitchen when he crafted his first batch of granola (Read More).

Cocomo Joe was gracious to send a box of their treats to our house to sample. Let me tell you, they have been devoured! Here's what we had a chance to try:

COCOMOCORN - Um... really? This is way better than I remember the hard core candy-coated caramel popcorn to taste. I actually took this to work with me and everyone was asking about it - it made quite the hit! Best of all... I didn't have to worry if it was a total wreck to my clean eating!
Salty Chocolate Granola - I was a little skeptical at first because of the name - I'm not a big salt fan, but nonetheless, I dove in and gave it a try. WOW! Am I glad I did! The chocolately taste is just enough to satisfy a craving and as soon as you get through the crunch, you can taste a slight hint of salt as you swallow the product. Yummy!
JOEBARS - They sent us quite a few Joebar's to try... cocoa, coffee, cranberry, fig, green and mango. They were great, but for me, it's a toss up between the cranberry and the mango.  These are a wonderful snack - just make sure they fit within your desired caloric intake for the day!

Want to try your own? No problem! The folks at Cocomo Joe are going to hook up a lucky reader with their very own sample pack as well! Just enter below for your chance to win - easy as that!

Product Review & GIVEAWAY :: DA Active

Have you ever heard of DA Active?  Their clothes are AMAZING and their customer service is top notch.

Let me just start off by saying that this outfit has been EVERYWHERE with me.  I wore it on the way to Colorado (in the airport), to the gym for back day, hiking in the North Georgia mountains, and running in my neighborhood.

The outfit in the picture above is the Crossback Tank Top (blunight with white trim) and the Fold Over Crop (black bottom/graphite fold down).

The picture makes the top look blue but it is a beautiful purple color in person.  I absolutely love the contrast with the white trim!  I was automatically drawn to the top because of the design of the back - I had never seen anything like it before!

I've heard that their pants felt like butter and I was skeptical but it is true - they do!  They are the most comfortable pants I have tried.  Like I mentioned, I have worn this outfit everywhere and it is so comfortable!

I ordered a size 4 top and a size 4 bottom.  I usually wear a 2/4 in pants and a size small top.  The pants fit amazingly but the top was a little tight for my preference so next time I would order a size 6 top (I am used to wearing loose tops to workout in).  You can check out their size chart to find out which size would work best for you!

The material wicked away my sweat and I was very comfortable throughout my workout.  The top has built in cups that are not too big or too small!  They are the perfect size.

The best part is...DA Active is going to give one of our readers a chance to win a pair of their own black/graphite Fold Over Crops!

Why it's OK to Fail

Over the past few weeks, I have received several phone calls and emails from readers and friends who have either fallen off the wagon or are doubting themselves. I wish that I could tell them and you that there is some magical formula to reach your goals, whether it's fitness goals, work goals or life goals. But, there is NOT.

Let's talk nutrition right now...
The way our bodies respond to different foods and different exercises is trial and error. It is imperative that you try something and stick with it for more than a week! You may see quick changes in your body within a week from a change in diet, but for real change to occur, it takes a little time. If you begin to plateau 2-3 weeks later, no worries. It's OK to fail! Think of yourself as a science experiment - you don't always get the outcome you are expecting on the first try. It takes constant refining to produce the results that you want. As our bodies age and respond to stimuli within nature, stress and family situations, you will need to adapt by changing your diet to suit your altered lifestyle.

Let's talk workout routine right now...
Ok... so it seems right that what we always do, what our bodies are used to, won't work forever, right? Well then why do so many of us fall in a rut of only doing certain exercises, only certain cardio machines? Perhaps, because it is comfortable... we know what we are doing and it doesn't make us sore afterward. If I can't say it enough, CHANGE IT UP!! You will NOT be a failure if you change up your exercises and feel like a fool doing them because they are awkward or you are unsure of proper form. Ask a trainer to help you with proper form - 9 times out of 10, they will help without charging you or pressuring you to sign a contract with them.  (Just don't ask them for a workout plan and expect them to do this for free.) It takes change in your workout routine to "trick" your body and produce positive results.

There's my pep talk for today! Don't be afraid to fail! If something doesn't produce the result you want the first time, you can only refine it and try again! This is not failure! It's simply finding a way NOT to do something.

When you just can't get it together read this.

Good luck!

Product Review and GIVEAWAY:: Sweaty Betty

It's no surprise that we love Sweaty Betty over here at H&S! This awesome company out of the UK has an enormous selection of the cutest workout, swimwear and athletic accessories.  Because they are so wonderful, they gave us the opportunity to review one of their products, the Ballerina Yoga Cami!

Here's the review:
Shipping - Sweaty Betty's shipping is simple and fast. Although you are ordering something from the UK, it comes rather quickly with no problems clearing customs. They package the items in a little hanging bag that has a handle for ease in carrying from your mailbox. Once you open the little pouch, your item is tucked carefully in a plastic bag, inside a drawstring canvas bag that is reusable.

Fabric - I can't rave enough the feel of this cami! It's super soft! I have never worn a bamboo-based textile, but I'm a believer now! Did you know it's also naturally antibacterial? The fabric was great for the gym - it wicked sweat throughout my entire workout and dried especially fast so that I didn't feel cold or disgusting as I finished my routine.

Fit - The fit of this is great! I ordered a size XS based on the size chart online. It's perfect! The built-in bra is a great addition to the cami - it's roomy if you are busty-er, but if you have the opposite issue like I do, it works just fine without feeling like you have a lot of extra fabric.
The length is a major plus of this top as well! I hate pieces that come right to the top of my pants - I get a little self-conscious baring my midriff in the gym. The Ballerina Yoga Camiis long enough that I didn't have that problem at all - in fact, I was able to rusch it for a little bit of style at the gym.

Functionality - As mentioned in the Fabric section of the review, this piece is great for regulating your body temperature - it wicks sweat easily and also dries quickly so you don't get cold as you move through your exercises. The cami without a sports bra would function very well for lower-impact classes or even a weightlifting routine. However, for HIIT cardio or a hardcore run, I would suggest that you add a sports bra under the top.

Here's the best part.... Sweaty Betty is offering one He&She reader their own Ballerina Yoga Cami! Complete the entries below for your chance to win!

Good luck!

Save Money on Clean Eat Pantry Staples

Let's face it, there's a tradeoff that you make when you follow a clean eating lifestyle. You trade the high costs of medical bills for the slight increase in your weekly/monthly grocery bill. A $10-20 spike in my bill to purchase whole, fresh foods is worth it than to spend $30 on a copay to see a doctor and an additional $20 in medications each month!

Just because you understand your new lifestyle may cost a little more doesn't mean that you have to settle for paying high grocery store prices! Here are a few tips to get you saving money on your grocery bill without even having to leave your house (saves on gas too!).

Amazon Prime - Have you heard about this service? It's an annual fee of $79, but it provides you with FREE, 2-day shipping on all Prime-Eligible (just make sure this option is checked when you are searching for items) purchases - most of the time, you will receive your item next day at no additional charge. Prime also includes FREE instant streaming of movies and TV shows, as well as 1 FREE Kindle book to "borrow" each month.  You can get a one-month trial for FREE if you haven't had the service before!

$79 a little steep? No problem! Split the service with friend or two! Amazon also allows you to link multiple accounts to your Prime membership, with multiple addresses for shipping.

Now that you have that info, here are the items we save on each week/month:

Know what you really need. I am not intolerant to gluten, so for me, I don't need to buy gluten-free oat flour; however, my grocer only has this type available and I end us buying it out of necessity.
Amazon Price - $11.14/4 bags = $2.79 ea
Or, use Amazon's subscribe and save feature and buy 4 bags for $10.58 = $2.65 ea
Kroger Price (Gluten Free) - $5.49 ea
Amazon's Price for Gluten Free (Auto Ship) - $ 21.01/4 = $5.25 ea

Amazon Price - $36/4 bags = $9 ea
Or, use Amazon's subscribe and save feature and buy 4 bags for $34.20 = $8.55 ea
Kroger Price - $9.99 ea

Amazon Price - $16.47/2 = $8.24 ea
Or, use Amazon's subscribe and save feature and buy 2 containers for $15.65 = $7.83 ea
Kroger Price - $8.79 ea

Amazon Price - $11.23/3 = $3.74 ea
Or, use Amazon's subscribe and save feature and buy 3 containers for $10.67 = $3.55 ea
Kroger Price - $4.29 ea

You name it, you can probably find it on Amazon. With the Prime account, it's not worth it NOT to take advantage of the savings that you can garner with making online purchases work for you!

What do you buy online that saves you money at the grocery store?

Here is our "Online Retailers" shopping list.

Clean Eat Recipe :: Blueberry Burst Protein Shake

The first day of fall is next week!  I love fall and winter but I am also sad to see all of the yummy (in-season) fruit go!  Use up all of those blueberries before summer is over!  This shake is delicious and very easy to make!  It is similar to our Berrylicious Protein Shake but the pea protein gives it an awesome flavor!

Ingredients

1 cup blueberries (we use the frozen bag from Costco)
1/2 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
1 scoop of vanilla pea protein
6 oz almond milk
4 oz liquid egg whites (pasteurized)
Handful of spinach (optional but you can NOT taste it!)
Flax (optional)

Directions
1. Blend all ingredients.
2. Enjoy!

Macros
Calories: 265
Protein: 33g
Carbs: 29g
Fat: 5g

He and She Tip: You can use all whey protein (one scoop) but the pea protein just makes it even more delicious.  If you have never tried pea protein before you should!

He and She Tip II: I usually drink this either for breakfast or immediately (within 30 minutes) of my workout because of the carb count.

Motivational Monday :: NO Excuses!

The quote in the photo above sums up our trip to the Rocky Mountains.  Scott and I just got back from a hiking trip there.  As we were hiking Monday, there was a man who was hiking with a cane and he had two people helping him (I assume they were his children).  He wasn't that old but you could tell that something was wrong (maybe his back).  I overheard his daughter ask him if he was okay, and he said "Yes! Of course, no need to stop, I'm doing just fine".  Then they stepped out of the way to let some people go around and he said "Oh, we are just stopping to cool off a bit" (he was joking - it was 43 degrees outside).  This literally brought tears to my eyes...here is a man who has EVERY EXCUSE in the world to sit at home but he was outside, enjoying nature, exercising, has he was SO HAPPY.

This also reminded me of a man we encountered last year while backpacking in Boone, NC.  He was 80 years old hiking up a trail considered "strenuous".  He chatted with us for a few minutes and told us that he hiked this trail every Saturday before making his weekly trip to the grocery store.

These two men ARE AMAZING. YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE. Whatever excuse you THOUGHT you had is invalid. If these men can exercise SO CAN YOU.

IF YOU CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK YOU WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.  Stop feeling sorry for yourself...stop making EXCUSES - JUST DO WHAT IT TAKES!  Live a happy, healthy life!

No excuses this week!  Eat Clean and Work Hard!

Have a great week!

Product Review & GIVEAWAY :: About Time

Welcome to Week Three of our GIVEAWAYS!

About Time sent us some awesome samples and they were also kind enough to provide a GIVEAWAY for one of our readers!

The protein flavors are amazing.  If I had to choose an absolute favorite, I think it would be Birthday Cake!  Here is a link to my favorite protein shake recipe for the Birthday Cake flavor (dated 09/07/11 - go to that page and search for "Dark Chocolate Birthday Cake Shake")!

About Time is one of the cleanest protein supplement we've found and it is one of the most cost-effective protein powders on the market (about $0.90 per 20 gram serving - buy here!).  All of their powders are 100% whey isolate, so it is among the most digestible of all protein sources.

About Time also produces a few other great products such as small, milk-jug style containers already loaded with protein...all you have to do is add liquid (we tried the Peaches & Cream with unsweetened vanilla almond milk and it was AMAZING!).  They also have a soy-free, non-GMO, vegan antioxidant drink that delivers 2,400 ORAC units per serving.

We were also VERY impressed with the oatmeal bars that they included.  They are one of our favorite meal-replacement bars.  We took them hiking with us to Rocky Mountain National Park!

You can take our word for it that all the flavors are awesome or if you don't trust us (ha!) you can buy a sample pack (you can choose any 2 flavors for $3.99 - with free shipping) to find your favorite!

The Big M - Motivation!

After a long weekend here in the States, the last thing we all want to do is go back to our weekly routines - no time to sleep in, hitting that snooze button just a few more times this morning. I know! It's rough! I'm right there with you. However, you have a choice today...

Research has shown that it takes 21 days to make a habit. I don't know for sure, but I'm fairly certain for me, it takes about 3 days to break a habit (a good habit - bad ones take longer). This morning, I'm taking the pledge and I hope you will too - don't let your long weekend, a vacation, or even a slip up on eating clean and staying healthy break your routine this week. Jump back into it full force and make this short week the BEST week EVER!

What are your tips for staying on track after a long weekend?

Happy Tuesday!
